Beijing Capital International Airport will become the world’s busiest airport as soon as this year, overtaking Atlanta, a new report says. The report, China Airports Evolution Analysis, released this week by aviation analysts OAG, presents data showing that Beijing’s scheduled non-stop passenger capacity will be bigger than Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport during 2012, increasing to around 55 million people. Atlanta has been top of the list of world’s busiest air transport hubs for the last 15 years.
“The Chinese air travel market has the potential to grow 10 times from where it is today, assuming China will reach a similar level of propensity to travel as Europe and the US and to become 4.3 times the size of the US air travel market,” OAG stated the report. “This potential presents huge opportunities for the aviation industry, and in years to come the top 20 airports of the world will be dominated by Chinese airports.”
As previously reported on TTG Nordic, China plans to build 45 airports over the coming five years in an effort to satisfy its people’s growing travel demands.
